Theme: Salt and Light of the World: Known by Works!
In the first reading, St. Paul reaffirmed how determined and strengthened they were in their missionary journeys. They were never discouraged by the negative experiences they had but were encouraged by the “yes” of Christ, which lives in their heart. In the gospel, Jesus encourages and fortifies us in our daily lives as we go through the plains of the changing world. We live in a world today that is besieged of different ideologies and lifestyles; a world that tries to integrate religion, faith, and spirituality with secularism so that everything will be one under the control of worldly secular influence; Jesus, thus reminds us of our roles as Christians in the world. The two properties in the analogies of Jesus, salt and light, are two properties whose effect can not be neglected and are seriously felt in their lack. Hence, they express the indispensable place of Christians in the world, not by just being Christians, but by good works, for faith without good works is dead.
Child of God, we must endeavour today not to be conformed to the standards of the world, but to illumine it with our lives and good works, for although we are in the world, we are not of the world.
